SONET
SONET stands for Synchronus Optical Network and is the American National Standards Institute for synchronus data transmission on optical media. The international equivalent is the Synchronus Digital Hierachy. Together they make international standards so digital networks can interconnect. They also make sure that existing conventional systems can take advantage of optical media. They also produce standards for the line rates that are know as Optical Carrier levels or OC that make up alot of the Internet backbone.
