Random access memory

Random access memory
Ram stands for random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly. RAM is by far the most common type of memory that is found in computers as well as other devices.

RAM can be used at any time, as the term random implys. DRAM can support access times of 60 nanoseconds, while SRAM can typicaly give around 10 nanoseconds.

There are two basics types of ram that available for the personal computer. The first is known as DRAM, which stands for dynamic ram, the second type is SRAM which is static RAM.

Dynamic RAM
This is the most common ram that is in use due to the low price of it. The word dynamic means that the memory has to be constantly refreshed. It is some times known as dee-ram to show the difference between DRAM and SRAM.

Static RAM
Short for static random access memory, and pronounced ess-ram. SRAM is a much more reliable and faster type of random access memory against the cheaper and more common DRAM due to the fact that it doesnt have to be dynamicly updated, it instead is static.

Memory Cards
There is a new breed of memory that is designed for use in Digital Cameras. When you are taking photos with a camera it will typicaly come with 16MB internal memory to save the images. Such a small amount of memory can easily be taken up with 20 or 30 photos. By inserting a memory card into the camera storage space of up to 2GB can be had, where storage of photos can go up to the thousand mark or greater.
