Ping
Short for Packet Internet Groper, a utility to determine whether a specific IP address is accessible and online. It works by sending a packet of data to the specified address and waiting for a reply. PING is used primarily to troubleshoot Internet connections, there are several programs out there that can send a large number of packets to a remote address and can swamp the device and cause it to shut down.
