GEO
This stands for Geosynchronus/Geostationary Earth Orbit. It is a satellite system used in telecommunications. GEO's orbit the earth at 22,300 miles above the earths surface in a fixed position in space in relation to the earths surface. The satellite rotates once for every one rotation of the earth. Because of the constant position of the satellite in the sky it means that the transmission station on the earth needs to point in only one direction in space to transmit signals to the GEO satellite. The satellites are used for the transmissions of high speed data transfer, tv and other wide band applications. One satellite covers 40% of the earths surface so very few satellites are needed for complete coverage of the planet.
