Domain Names

The domain is the end part of the address that usualy specifies what type of website you are contacting. They are generaly seperated by full stops. There are many different types of domains, the major ones are known as TLD's or top level domains, these are the .com, .net, .org, these are generaly regarded as being American TLD's but can be used by anyone from any country in the world. English TLD's are .co.uk, .org.uk and .ac.uk

Here is a quick run down of the new names that are available to people who wish to register domain names.

.COM: This is short for .commercial. Domains that end with the .com extension are by far the most used on the world wide web, these can be purchased by any individual or business.

.NET: This one is Short for .network, this extension was originally designed to be used by technical Web sites. However, domains using this extension can be registered by anyone.

.ORG: Short for .organization. Originally set up for non-profit firms and any other organizations that did not fit under the .com or .net extension, any individual or business is able to now register a .org domain name.

.AERO: The Top level domain designated for the air transport industry, which is only available to aviation community members, this domain suffix is now live and fully functional.

.BIZ: The .biz TLD is a designated extension for businesses. Domains using the .biz extension must be used for business or commercial use.

.COOP: This TLD is not very well known but is available to cooperatives, cooperative service organizations and wholly owned subsidiaries of cooperatives.

.INFO: The first unrestricted top-level domain since .com, .info domains are available to the general public.

.MUSEUM: This TLD is available only to museums and museum organizations.

.NAME: Available to the general public, .name email addresses are listed as firstname@lastname.name or lastname@firstname.name, while Web sites are listed as www.firstname.lastname.name.

.PRO: The .pro suffix was created for certified professionals including lawyers, doctors and accountants. RegistryPro, is the organization in charge of administering .pro domains.
