Backbone

The part of the communications network that carries the heaviest traffic. It joins the LAN via bridges and/or routers and serves as a communications highway for LAN to LAN traffic. It is also a basis of design for the overall network. The Internet is made up of vast backbones that join large global wide area networks all over the world to create an international network of networks know as the Internet.
